Shot! Shot! Shot! Health Benefits Associated with Tequila

If you’ve ever experienced a hang over after turning up on Taco Tuesday or went missing the day after Cinco de Mayo trying to nurse yourself back to good health, you may be hard pressed to believe that there are actually some well documented health benefits associated with tequila. Now, I don’t mean just any tequila…but tequila made from 100% blue agave may easily become your drink of choice after you spend some time educating yourself about these 3 health perks. Read on!

Tequila is low in calories.

A 1 oz. shot of tequila is approximately 64 calories, compared to an equal amount of vodka, which has around 96 calories or rum at 97 calories. Agave has a naturally sweet flavor, so it’s easier on the palate as a shot without adding the sugary mixers that are loaded with calories carbs, artificial flavors and dyes.

Tequila is gluten free.

Tequila is naturally gluten free when made with the blue agave plant. So many who suffer with gluten allergies or celiac disease may choose this spirit for the occasional sip. It’s important to check and make sure the bottle notes 100% blue agave and is not what’s called a mixto, which may contain up to 49% of fermented sugarcane. In the case of tequila, gold or “oro” is a no no, as this indicates a mixto. Aging does not affect whether a tequila is gluten free or not, so drink your reposado, blanco, or añejo…just make sure to check the label!

Tequila minimizes hangovers.

Tequila has fewer congeners than comparably priced brown liquors. Congeners are the byproducts of the fermentation process and are the main culprits for hangovers, outside of overindulging and subsequent dehydration. Taking that straight shot of tequila may decrease your chances for a hangover the next morning.
